www.the-blueprints.com Newsletter, August 2009

Hello [USERNAME],

The-Blueprints.com is proud to present to you the eleventh monthly newsletter, with the latest news on the largest free reference images database on the web.
The Shop
One of the big new features for this year has been put online: The Shop

In this Shop you can buy products related to the images found on this website: a premium membership that adds extra features to this very website, tutorials on how to model certain things, ready to go 3D models if you are working on a product and don't have the time or resources to create one yourself etc etc.

As per immediately you are also able to add your own products to the shop! 3D models, textures, scripts etc. Everything related to 3D modeling or any 3D program can be sold. This will not be limited to one 3D program, you can add products for ANY 3D program out there, whichever you want to sell, for whatever price. You will have complete freedom.

So are you a 3D modeler and have any 3D models for sale? Add them to the shop and start selling them right away! We have written an extensive tutorial on how to, explaining each step up the way, you can find it here: How do I add my product to the Shop?.

If you need help adding a lot of products in one go, or have problems uploading large files, please drop us an e-mail and we'll help you out.

Affiliate Program
On top of that there will also be an affiliate program: when someone comes from your website to mine, and makes a purchase in the shop, it means you get a percentage of the sale!
The functionality for this has been built, and an explanation on how to get this working through your website, can be found here ».
Premium Membership
Another new feature has been published: the Premium Membership. This membership is be available for a small fee in the new Shop.
This membership fee is not for one year, or two years, but is indefinitely and will give you these and all future options on this website, until the end of the Internet! :)

The additional features, compared to a regularly registered member are:
  • No banners or advertisements
  • See all updates, before they are published (you'll be able to see all future additions)
  • Thumbnail blueprint list views
For an example of the blueprint thumbnail lists: visit this example page.
  • Custom number of blueprints in list views
  • Sort blueprints by popularity
  • Your name will have a special color in the Comments, Forum and Guestbook, and will have this icon next to it .
However these are just the extra features that I could come up so far; you can also request your own functionality, and if it's implementable, it'll be added a couple days after you have requested the feature.
World War 1 Airplanes
A while ago I added a beautiful batch of World War 1 airplanes: they were very clean, all had top, side and front views and were at a very high resolution. However Internet Explorer (the browser) had some trouble showing those large .gif images, and made it look like they were missing (the dreaded little 'x' showed up). But the files were actually there, and did show up in all other (modern) browsers. I had some complaints by people saying it wasn't showing, and people also started to give low ratings because they thought I had made a mistake.

All of that was no good, and most of all it was a shame that people couldn't see the images (most users still use Internet Explorer) since they are so pretty, so I converted them to a different format (PNG), and tested it: they should show up fine now.

Some images in other sections show the same problem, and I'll try to address it somewhere next week. I am not entirely sure how many images don't how in Internet Explorer though, so it could be that it would take me a while to convert them all to a different file format.
Gallery update
At the end of July and beginning of August I added a number of new features to the Gallery:
now you can sort by 'Date', 'Project Title', 'Views' and 'Rating'. When sorting by rating, only projects that have a rating show up (so it could be that you don't see as many projects as you did when sorting by date).
Also the way you browse through the Gallery has been improved, and made unformly with the rest of the website.
Gallery
Below are a few of the fantastic examples found in the gallery, that were added during the course of last month:

You can add your work too: it doesn't have to be recent work, as long as you used one of our images to help or guide you.
We just love to see how all you people put the images to good use. It doesn't matter if what you have made isn't of the highest quality: we're not all Leonardo DaVinci or Donatello, but we can have fun creating new things.

Add your work Go ahead, add your own work now or browse the gallery!
New members
10000 Members!
I'd like to welcome some special new members, who managed to get a nice number ID when they registered:
the 95000th: vanessacs
the 100000th: dita_di_polvere

And so this means that we now have over 100.000 registered members! I think that calls for a glass of champagne.
Thanks
I want to thank all the people who have been sending in all the images/3-views/bluepints in July: it really helps me out. This way we can keep the website growing at a steady pace.

So special thanks go out to the following people: Dr. Dan Saranga, jemahri, Foxtrot, gabru, Study, oytao, Samsagax, poollvandam, Alex Koens, Jaroslav Körner, DANger, Moheb, Ivan Diaz, Andrew Stanford, j6566, John Volchan, jagpalsingh, Luis Alvarez, Zsolt Dar ázs, Whoosaaa, David MedinA, Serkan, Lerry Morganda, micheal brown, shiny rajan, prasannakumar, saneh vyasm, Rob, and PGM.

Don't despair if you don't see your images added immediately to the website; there always is a planning on when to update which images and it could be that your ones are last in line. That doesn't mean your input is not important, or of low quality, or that I don't care, it is just that other images are going to be added first because that is the way my organization has planned it. Your image will be added! :)
Link exchange
I am looking to exchange links with other high traffic, and high ranked websites. You can either get a link on the regular Links page, or on the front page, depending on what kind of website you have.

Visit the links page here.
Upcoming
A lot of new images will be added to the database this month, mostly in the following categories: modern airplanes, world war 1 and 2 airplanes and ships.

Quite a few people have asked us for a better and more extensive editing possibility for things they add to the Gallery: I will work on that too in the near future.

As mentioned above, there are some blueprints that do not show up in Internet Explorer (and IE alone...), and show a little red x: somehow it doesn't like certain large dimension .gif images. In the next week or so I'll try and find all the images that break and convert them to PNG's in stead of GIF.
